The First Year course is designed to provide a grounding in the basics of painting, drawing and design. An increasingly wide variety of materials and techniques are used so that pupils gain an insight into some of the possibilities for future work. The course comprises: 1. Colour mixing and matching – an introduction into names of specific colours, consistency of paint and to gain an understanding of which hues to select for specific colour mixes
2. Landscape drawing – here, pupils learn about the different grades of pencil ; how to create strong composition, and then use texture and shading effectively. These small sketches are then scaled up to become finished paintings.
3. Designs for a school Christmas card. Original drawings are scanned and then taken into Corel Draw so that images can be coloured and manipulated, giving pupils a useful tool for more advanced graphics work in the future.
4. It has become something of a tradition to produce entries for the Boisdale Prize which is connected to Arisaig Games. This year, pupils are designing panels for a tapestry which is to be made up on the theme of, ‘The Diaspora’, connected to, ‘2014, the Year of the Homecoming’. If suitable, a winning entry may be used for the finished tapestry.
5. Analytical drawing, producing accurate outline and then shading to achieve effects of three dimensions.
Throughout the year, pupils work in individually, or in groups, and assess their own work (and also that of others in the class) in order to work towards achieving the aim of becoming increasingly knowledgeable, confident and independent learners.
